The thyroid gland consists of two lobes located on either side and in front of the windpipe. It regulates the body's metabolism—the rate at which the body's cells manufacture energy from food or produce new cells. A thyroid that produces too much of its hormone causes a person to become nervous, lose weight (despite an increased appetite), and feel "keyed up." An underactive thyroid causes loss of hair, increased sensitivity to cold, and a tired feeling. The body does not produce enough energy for its requirements.
