The Menopause Women face the -related change of life, or menopause, in their late forties and early fifties. Physiological changes during this period include loss of fertility and the end of menstruation. Hormonal changes also occur, especially in the production of estrogen. It was long assumed that this change in body chemistry and function accounted for nervous symptoms associated with menopause, such as hot flashes and irritability.
But many women experience no unpleasantness at all. This has led some researchers to suspect that the most significant aspects of change of life are psychological. But other studies indicate that the amount of decrease in hormone production is crucial. This theory is supported by the fact that doctors have treated many women successfully with hormones, to ease menopausal symptoms.
A woman's attitude toward menopause as a life event is frequently more important than the physical symptoms. Menopause represents a transition into the middle age years when childbearing is no longer possible. Researchers have found that younger women tend to be somewhat fearful and negative toward menopause. Women who are experiencing it, or who have already been through it, view it as a release from family obligations and a chance to redirect energies.
At one time it was thought that men, too, went through a male menopause that was physical in nature. There is little evidence to support this view. It is now believed that the mid-life crisis in men is psychological only. Career and family pressures, along with approaching old age, cause anxieties in a society that values youth. The middle-aged man who has been a faithful husband sometimes seeks extramarital affairs, in part to prove his youth and vigor, and in part to recapture the romance of earlier years.
