How Psychologists Study Development

Human development is determined both by what we are born with and what happens to us after we are born. The subject of human development is the study of how people grow and change. The changes that take place in a person over a lifetime, and the differences in changes between individuals are both of interest to a student of human development. The period for which a psychologist studies change is not centuries, but the human life span. The changes that are studied are those in an individual's behavior, physical and mental. Learning how humans develop includes finding out how people learn, how they think, how they remember, and how they solve problems.

By describing how people behave in different situations, psychologists pile up information and set up norms. These help people to know, not what should be the way people behave, but what is.

The other thing psychologists do besides describing development is explain it. They set up studies and experiments to find out why people develop as they do, and why some differ from others in the ways they develop. Along the way, psychologists find ways people can make the most of development by changing environmental conditions, or by treatment.
