Think back over some situations in your life that really shook you up. The death of a best friend or a parent certainly would be one. Perhaps you left home and the security of your family, and you were seriously homesick. This would be a stress reaction.
For more than twenty years, psychologists Thomas H. Holmes and Richard H. Rahe studied the effect stresses have on individuals over the course of time. Based on ratings by many people, Holmes devised a scale. Starting with 100 units for the death of a spouse, he scaled the units down through 11 for a parking ticket. He called the scores Life Change Units. To measure their impact he weighed them against the health of his subjects. Too high a score, he believes—over 200 in a single year—is more than the average American can take without a risk of getting sick in the near future.
