Sensorimotor period (0-2 years)
Up to age two, an infant learns a great deal about the world by touching things. In this sensorimotor period, there is no thinking, in the abstract sense, but a great deal of sensing. During this period of feeling, a child learns that actions have effects. A ball bounces not only when he or she drops it, but when someone else does. This stage marks the beginning of causal thinking.
An infant is at the center of his or her world. In simple games of "What do you see?" and "What do 1 see?" infants under two consistently thought the other person saw what they themselves saw. Piaget called this experience of being unable to see that the environment looks different to someone else egocentrism.
