Erikson thinks the central conflict of this period involves genera-tivity or, instead, self-absorption. By now the has shifted from being primarily a learning animal to a "doing" and teaching one. An important part of generativity centers on establishing and guiding the next generation. For many people, this involves their own family, but the truly generative person is also concerned with the world and helping to build a better society for all young people. A generative individual is productive and, within personal limits, creative. The perfecting of earlier skills brings a new sense of accomplishment. There is more time for hobbies and leisure activities. Women whose children are grown may find a new career or return to a former one. Although we slow down biologically, there is no evidence of intellectual decline even in late middle age.

Failure to meet the challenge of generativity leads to self-absorption. In more ordinary words, we "get in a rut." Not only are we less open to new experiences, but we become absorbed in ourselves. Life becomes dull and uninteresting and we focus inward on our private worries and concerns. We just complain instead of trying to change things that irritate us. Unfortunately, the more self-absorbed we become, the more difficult it is to launch into new endeavors.
