Located almost in the center of the brain, the pituitary gland secretes a number of different hormones. One is a growth hormone which is responsible for the development of the body during the early years. People who receive too little of this hormone grow up to be abnormally small (dwarfs), while people who receive too much, as Keith did, become abnormally large (giants). The other hormones that the pituitary secretes find their way to the other glands in the body. These glands release their hormones upon chemical command from the pituitary, which is why it is often called the "master gland" of the endocrine system. The pituitary receives its orders from the hypothalamus.
