A personality trait is a characteristic of a person's behavior in many situations. Traits reflect a person's feelings, attitudes, motivations, and values. We would say a person who likes other people and talks easily with them is sociable. A person who always looks on the bright side of things is said to be optimistic. But are these and other characteristics inborn, or are they due to experiences that have taken place in a person's environment? For centuries scientists believed heredity was the key factor. Body fluids were thought to be especially important. Bile is a fluid, usually greenish, that comes from the liver. Early scientists thought a person who was usually angry simply had too much bile. People who were sad most of the time were thought to have a black bile. Today no psychologists accept this idea.
