He used to be fairly quiet and shy. He was not very good in competitive sports. "Not enough drive," "lets people push him around," were frequent comments about him. He always seemed sluggish and slightly remote, though his girlfriend said she liked his gentle manner.
It was at the first fall football practice of his senior year when the changes in Keith were first noticed. On an end sweep coming his way, Keith smashed through a guard and nailed the halfback who had to be carried off on a stretcher. Later, a fight broke out between Keith and a fellow teammate; it ended when Keith knocked him out. "What's gotten into Keith?" everyone was wondering.
His recent twenty-pound weight gain and his steadily increasing height were just explained by his greater appetite. His girlfriend noticed a change in the way he related to her: now he was aggressive and demanding. He participated in weekly weekend brawls.
Upon returning home from his father's funeral, Keith finally realized something was wrong inside himself. He had loved his father very much, but didn't grieve at his loss. His emotions were cold, lacking any real feeling. Adding further misery to Keith's worries, the headaches he was having kept coming more often, and each seemed worse than the last. Despite it all, Keith kept on growing.
When a doctor examined Keith, he readily diagnosed why Keith had become such a different person in the past four years. Keith was suffering from a tumor at the base of the brain, or more precisely on his pituitary gland. The pressure on the gland stimulated it to release more hormones. One of these was the hormone that controls body growth. Keith was on his way to becoming a giant.
The tumor also triggered the release of other hormones from other glandsthose that are involved in stress reactions and emotions. Biologically, Keith was at a peak in emotional stress all the time! Eventually he might have died from an enlarged heart or circulatory problems caused by his constant state of stress.
Everything changed abruptly after the tumor was removed. His headaches vanished. He grew weaker; his appetite diminished. He was no longer a tough guy and stopped picking fights.
By the sweep of the surgeon's wand, the twenty-one-year-old superman was literally transformed back to his mild-mannered "Clark Kent" personality.
What had been happening to Keith? His behavior had been chemically programmed in an abnormal way. Abnormal, because much of your behavior is chemically programmed, programmed by the glands in your body. Your complex nervous system is an electrical system, just one of the communication systems that affect your behavior. Working alongside it and in close cooperation with it is a chemical communication systemthe system of endocrine glands.
