The middle view There is a middle position, and it is a popular one with psychologists. This is the view that heredity and environment work together to determine personality traits. A baby may be born with a tendency toward developing certain traits—smiling a lot, for example. But the baby's experiences will have just as much to do with the baby's personality traits. If people often smile at the baby, that trait will, in fact, develop.
Sometimes a person's experiences will change what the person's heredity would suggest. For example, a baby boy whose physical strength seems average for an infant may receive from his parents an excellent diet and outstanding care. Later he begins lifting weights and becomes an unusually strong person. Environment can play a vital part. The experiences we have determine what language we speak, our tastes in food and music, and many other characteristics.
