When does the move from young hood to middle age take place? This varies in individuals, just as the stages of childhood and adolescence do. But even in general terms, psychologists do not agree about middle age. Some of them say young hood extends to age forty-five and middle age to seventy. Many others speak of ages thirty-five through fifty as early middle age, and fifty through sixty-five as later middle age. There is agreement, however, on many of the characteristics and tasks of middle age.
People in the middle years become more aware of time's passing than they were before.
In Neugarten's view, the middle aged see themselves as bridgers of generations. "Life is restructured in terms of time-left-to-live rather than time-since-birth." For people whose youthful dreams have not been realized, middle age becomes a time of regret and the "middle-age blues." A sense of humor rescues many in the middle years, and they accept the less-than-ideal circumstances of life philosophically. Efforts are directed toward family, job, and community. Giving and helping become necessary. The fantasies of fame and fortune need not necessarily give way to despair, but to making the most out of one's assets and planning future years sensibly.
Gradually, the developmental tasks shift from reaching goals to strengthening the position in life we have won for ourselves. People in the middle years become more conscious of biological change and sense, perhaps for the first time, their own mortality.
