Overly intrusive or exclusive contact

The extent to which differentials in wealth and culture create social problems is also influenced bv the nature of contact between tourists and residents. As discussed in section 7.3, this is air extremely complex factor, given the large number of individual face-to-face contacts that occur over the course of a tvpical visit arrd the myriad of "additional variables that mediate such interactions. These additional variables include personality tvpe, the moods of the individuals involved and the extent to which the culture or individuals within the culture tend to be extroverted or introverted.

Although some supporters of the advocacy platform argue that direct contact can dissolve stereotypes, it has been suggested above that this can make the situation even worse under certain circumstances, for example when the contacts are overly intrusive and exteird into backstage areas. However, problems can also result when tourists are channelled into exclusively tourism-focused spaces such as retail frontstages or enclave resorts (see section 8.3.2). In such cases, accusations may arise that the tourists are monopolising the most desirable spaces, that they are being deliberately snobbish or that small operators are being denied the opportunity to engage in commercial transactions with the tourists. Further, the lack of direct contact that is fostered by these attempts to remove tourists from local areas may iirdeed reinforce the cultural stereotypes that each group holds about the other. This discussion illustrates the paradox of resentment faced bv tourism managers. This recognises that tensions can be generated whether destination managers choose to maximise contact between tourists and locals through a strategy of dispersal, or whether they choose instead to pursue a policy of isolation to minimise these contacts.
