Hemispheres: Which Side Does What?
Since both hemispheres of the brain carry on many of the same functions, why don't they work at cross purposes? Competition between them is usually avoided because the cortex divides the work so that each is responsible for specific functions. Generally, the left hemisphere is responsible for logical, analytical thinking while the right hemisphere controls emotional, artistic, and creative functions.
EEG readings taken from both sides of the brain while various activities are being performed have shown which hemisphere is more active during specific tasks. When subjects were drawing a picture or humming a tune, the right hemisphere was more active. The same was true for remembering and recognizing visual images, colors, and spatial forms—the right hemisphere was more active. When subjects were writing, speaking, thinking analytically, or processirig information in a logical sequence, the left hemisphere was the active side. The normal brain seems to function best when one side is temporarily idling while the other operates at full throttle.
Which side's in charge? In most people, one hemisphere is dominant. This means that one hemisphere has the tendency to "take charge" more often than the other. In most people, the left hemisphere is dominant, and the right hemisphere is the silent partner much of the time. In people with left-hemisphere dominance, the right hemisphere usually only speaks up for the most artistic and emotional sides of their nature. When a left-hemisphere person suddenly gets a hunch about something out of the blue, it may be that his or her right hemisphere has snapped to attention for the moment.
Since the left side of the brain manages the right side of the body, left-hemisphere people write, throw, eat, and dial their telephones with their right hands. (And, since most people are right-handed, this is a nice way to remember the fact that the majority of people have dominant left hemispheres.) You would think that in left-handed people the right hemisphere would be dominant. However, more than half of all left-handed people have dominant left hemispheres. Psychologists cannot explain this phenomenon. This is just one of countless unsolved mysteries of the brain.
