Towards a green paradigm ?
Challenges to the dominant western environmental paradigm were mounted long before the present century — for example, in the writings of the American author Henry David Thoreau and the English author and social critic Charles Dickens. However, these were only individual and isolated voices that initially did little to challenge the dominant paradigm and its damaging environmental or social impacts, especially since these problems were offset by demonstrable improvements in the health and wellbeing of a growing proportion of the world's population. Since World War II the criticisms have gained momentum, and have been popularised through a sequence of high profile publications that have essentially shaped the post-World War II environmental movement. In addition to the environmental perspective, challenges to the dominant western environmental paradigm are evident in contemporary feminism, the global renaissance of indigenous people and the resurgent interests in religion and other movements that address various elements of the dominant paradigm.
