The study of old age, gerontology, is new to psychology. This is because old age itself is relatively new. In Roman times, the average life expectancy was twenty-two years. By the beginning of the twentieth century it was only about forty. Today it is around seventy. Within the next 100 years it could be pushed to ninety or more. This steadily advancing life span raises a troubling question. Do people live too long? Some people say yes, but often not about themselves.
