Fostering of social wellbeing and stability
Well-fed and prosperous people, all other things being equal, are usually less likelv to initiate social unrest or political upheaval. By creating jobs and generating income, tourism is therefore said to promote a level of economic development conducive to increased social wellbeing aird stability.
This promotion also occurs when a destination attempts to improve it-international competitiveness bv offering services and health standards at a level acceptable to the \1DC (more developed countries) generating regions. Although implemented because of tourism, local residents also derive an obvious and tangible social benefit from, say, the elimination of .i local malaria hazard or the introduction of electricitv, anti-crime measure* or paved roads to the district where an international-class hotel is located.
Tourism can also moderate the actions of repressive governments. Tin-presence of tourists, for example, was credited with softening the Chinese reaction towards anti-government demonstrations in the Tibetan capital ol Lhasa during 1987 and with disseminating news of the event to the outside world (Schwartz 1991). The presence of international athletes and media in Kuala Lumpur during the 1998 Commonwealth Games also had tin-effect of moderating the Malaysian government's actions against opposition protesters.
