You'll remember that in the section before, we said that sensory neurons inside the body monitor such things as sugar levels in individual cells. And that if the sugar level is found to be abnormal, the message is relayed to the hypothalamus which then, via the neurons in the peripheral nervous system, signals the imbalance to be corrected. What does it signal and how is the imbalance corrected? The glands are signaled; the glands release chemical messengers called hormones into the bloodstream which greatly affect behavior, the functioning of the body, and the course of its development.
