How Emotions Affect Behavior
Emotions can have positive or negative effects on behavior. Positively, emotions help us organize our behavior. When you enjoy doing something and feel good about doing it, you take care to do it well. Fear can mean survival when it helps a person avoid or deal with danger.
But emotions can also be disorganizing. Someone who is in a "blind rage" will strike out wildly, making the situation worse or hurting others in the process. Fear may be so strong that it paralyzes us and we "freeze." Students who fear taking an exam often become upset and are unable to deal with the questions rationally.
Emotions do affect behavior, though it is a mistake to say they cause behavior. Sometimes, however, an emotion is a motivation in itself ("I felt embarrassed, so I ended our conversation abruptly"). Sometimes emotions energize motivation; that is, they make it more likely that you will act, but the form the action takes depends on other factors. Jenny, in the supermarket, is a perfect example of this: she was mad and acted on her anger the first time. In the second instance, she was mad, and yet something motivated her to hold her behavior in check. She did not act on her anger. Emotions are the feelings associated with behavior; motives are the reasons we behave as we do.
