Scarce resources are combined to produce what are called economic goods, the subject of our study throughout this book. Any good or service produced from scarce resources is also scarce. Because economic goods are scarce, we constantly face decisions about how to use them. After all, the quantity of goods demanded or desired, by definition, exceeds the amount that is directly available from nature at a zero price; this is implicit in our definition of economic goods.
However, not all goods are economic; some are free.
