Death and Dying

Until a quarter-century ago, death was a taboo word in most Western countries, and little attention was paid to the psychological needs of the dying. This attitude has changed dramatically in recent years and a new discipline, thanatology, has come into being. Thanatology means the study of death. As the expected life span has grown to seventy-seven years for women and sixty-nine for men, more people are dealing with parents and other older relatives who contract lingering illnesses. Caring for elders, not only physically but emotionally, has brought many people face to face with an inevitable reality of life—death.
