Effects of the culture Many anthropologists play down the importance of heredity in determining personality traits. Anthropologists study entire environments, rather than individuals. They use the term culture to describe the total way of life of a group of people. Anthropologists such as Margaret Mead and Ruth Benedict tried to show, years ago, that personality traits were due to the group's culture. Some anthropologists even argue that heredity plays no role at all in determining personality. They believe that a human being is like a blank slate at birth.
