Corpus Callosum: The Bridge Between the Hemispheres
The ability to describe a sunset (speech is a function of the left hemisphere) as you visualize it (an activity of the right hemisphere) is :he work of the corpus callosum, a pathway of nerves that bridges the Hemispheres. In general, the corpus callosum lets the right-hand side of the body know what the left-hand side is up to, and vice versa.
When this bridge of nerves is damaged or surgically severed (as is done in some cases of severe epilepsy), the result is a person with a split brain. Both sides of the brain then operate more or less on their own. Each half seems to have its own sensations, perceptions, memories, and feelings. That sunset you visualized? You could probably still "see" it, but would be unable to describe it. The message would not be communicated to the next-door hemisphere. Although it is not easy, split-brain patients can learn to compensate.
