Coping with Stress
As we cannot avoid some degree of stress, it pays to know how to cope with it effectively. Physician Hans Selye gives three coping strategies: (1) learn how to behave in various situations so as to minimize stress, (2) recognize the source of your stress, and (3) find the level of stress at which you are most comfortable.
Note that in his first point Selye emphasizes learning. You can learn to adapt to stressful situations on the basis of similar experiences in the past. Selye believes that it is not usually stress as such that bothers us, but rather how we deal with it.
We can seldom deal with stress successfully if we don't recognize its source. Does the migraine headache just start up, or can you relate it to worry over some social or financial problem? Is it not being able to see a movie tonight that is frustrating you, or was it your failure to get an "A" on your term paper yesterday? People frequently take out their frustrations on the wrong object. Once we identify the stressor accurately, whether it is physical or emotional, we have a chance of bringing our response under control.
