Experiences and Thinking

The sudden insights that occur throughout a child's growing years happen at fairly definite times, and each marks a sharp break from the earlier stage of cognitive development. Piaget explained that the new understanding of how things relate to each other grows as a child's capacity to respond develops. Children make progress in understanding through a combination of their experiences with the environment and their ability to interpret these experiences in new ways. Past experience and thought are both necessary; neither is enough by itself.

Piaget stressed three principles of child development. A child is not a miniature . A child needs to take an active part in learning. Intellectual development involves changes in ways of organizing information, not just acquiring knowledge.
