Body build and personality Some psychologists believe inherited physical factors influence personality traits, however. For many years the findings of Harvard psychologist W. H. Sheldon were popular. He believed that body build went with certain personality traits. Sheldon rated two hundred college men according to how fat, muscular, or skinny they were. He said that the fat men were generally relaxed people who were deep sleepers. He found them very sociable. The muscular men were found to be competitive men who loved physical adventure. Sheldon found the skinny men tight in their physical movements, often tired, and not very sociable. Later studies did not find as close a relationship between physique and personality traits as Sheldon's studies had. But other studies reached the same conclusions Sheldon reached. Sheldon's studies do not prove that physical features determine personality traits. It may well be, for example, that some fat people act jolly because other people expect them to do so. The precise ways that physical featuresor other aspects of heredityaffect personality are not yet known.
