Every living thing needs food, water, and sleep to stay alive. Every organism also has to have some way to maintain a constant body temperature, a way to supply itself with oxygen, and a way to avoid bodily damage (pain serves as the body's signaling system). These are biological drives, forces that arise from needs and push the organism to fulfill its needs.

But fulfilling biological needs is only temporary. After you eat, you are no longer hungry. Your drive is reduced for the time being until you are hungry again. In this way, biological motivation is cyclical.

Organisms go to great lengths to respond to the cyclical problems of homeostasis. Squirrels, early in the fall season, begin to hoard food for the winter. Bears gorge themselves in the fall to develop thick layers of fat that serve as energy supplies during the long winter months of hibernation. And human beings are the most ingenious species of all! Not only have we learned to eat before hunger pangs hit, but we have developed agricultural systems and food storage and preservation techniques that insure constant food supplies.
